Preventing Holiday Weight Gain

BY HANNAH AUSTIN

With the holiday season quickly approaching, many people with be spending the next few
weeks cooking, cleaning and eating. Unfortunately with eating, weight and with weight gain comes the need to exercise. But, all this can be avoided by following these simple steps:

1) Eat a small meal a couple of hours before you know you are going to be eating a bigger meal. This will prevent you from gorging yourself and making yourself miserable.

2) To control the size of your meal, use smaller portions. The smaller the amount of food on your plate, the less that you will be tempted to eat. Portion control will help you control your food intake and keep your waist looking slim.

3) Eat Slowly. The human body takes 20 minutes to recognize when it is full. If a person eats until they feel full, they are actually already full and have begun to overeat. A way to avoid overeating is to eat slowly.

4) Keep track of what you are eating. During the holiday season, it is easy to get carried away in conversation and forget exactly how much you are eating. This leads to excess calories and unwanted weight gain. Prevent this by staying aware of what you eating.

5) Choose the turkey breast instead of the dark meat. The breast of a turkey contains fewer calories than the dark meat of the turkey. Also the fat of a turkey is contained in its skin, so by avoiding the skin, you can cut up to half the fat of the turkey.

If you follow these five simple rules this holiday season, you can be certain that your body will thank you.
